Side by Side: New Bristol vs. Old Bristol

Jeff Meyer and Kurt Smith · Thursday March 18, 2010

Once again, the argument that started immediately after the 2007 Sharpie 500, (the aftermath of which found me offering my resignation from this very site by the way… rejected, obviously!) rears its ugly head. That argument is simple: which Bristol configuration produces the best racing? The old or the new?

Now, since I have fought this battle before, and with an infinitely bigger foe than my esteemed colleague this time (zing!), I jumped at the chance to do it again. Why? Because during the last decade, I have attended all but three of the August night races, not as a member of the media, but as a fan!

Talladega Spoiler Test Bodes Well For Return To Track in April

What's Vexing Vito
Vito Pugliese · Thursday March 18, 2010

Three long years after inducing nausea and arousing feelings of hatred and revulsion among both fans and drivers, the much lamented rear-wing of the CoT is going the way of the dodo bird next week at Martinsville. The more familiar and fitting rear spoiler replaces it, and masses will rejoice upon its return.

Fanning the Flames: Cleaning Out the Inbox and Bracing for Bristol

NASCAR Fan Q & A
Matt Taliaferro · Thursday March 18, 2010

With March comes Madness, short track season, and spring cleaning — all of which kick off this week. And for me, the spring cleaning comes in the form of a few unanswered emails that have been rattling around my inbox from before Carl and Kes bogart’d all column space here on Thursdays.

Dialing It In: Truex Adjusting to Life at Waltrip Racing

Jay Pennell · Thursday March 18, 2010

After leaving Earnhardt Ganassi Racing at the end of the 2009 season, Martin Truex, Jr. was embarking on a new adventure he had not had in quite sometime – working with a new team. Since joining the NASCAR ranks in the Nationwide Series back in 2003, Truex primarily worked with the same group of guys – most notably crew chief Kevin “Bono” Manion – throughout his entire career. But after a decision to head to Michael Waltrip Racing for the 2010 season, Truex left that group behind and began to forge a new relationship with a new program, led by crew chief Pat Tryson.

No one knew what to expect of the new partnership; but it didn’t take long for the pairing to make an impact.

Fantasy Insider: Escaping Disaster At Thunder Valley

Thomas Bowles · Thursday March 18, 2010

There’s no race more nerve-wracking to set your fantasy team for than Bristol. It’s tough enough to pick at short tracks as it is, but the unpredictability of 500 laps at this half-mile puts so much outside your control that you’re spending most of your three hours Sunday simply trying to avoid a heart attack. Lightning can strike at Thunder Valley anytime, any place, causing unavoidable wrecks that can take a successful day down the wrong road in an instant. And with the SAFER barriers narrowing up the groove, we’re bound to see a race resembling the Bristol of old, with bumping and grinding making survival the name of the game on Sunday.

Did You Notice? ... Talladega Testing Confusion, Four NASCAR #1s, And Mayfield Pops Up?

Thomas Bowles · Wednesday March 17, 2010

Did You Notice? … We learned everything and nothing from this Talladega test … at the same time? In many ways, NASCAR’s choice to squeeze this experiment onto the schedule was good for two reasons:

1) The cars started out too fast with the initial plate package offered (a flat, 4.5-inch spoiler with two-inch extensions on either side, paired with a 66/64ths-inch restrictor plate). Those caused speeds well in excess of over 200 miles an hour.

Mirror Driving: NASCAR Senior Tour?, Faltering Gibbs, And Swapping Dates

Frontstretch Staff · Wednesday March 17, 2010

Four races into the new season, NASCAR has made several changes to improve competition in 2010. What has worked, what hasn’t, and what is the biggest thing they still need to do?

Tony: Multi-green-white-checkered (GWC) finishes have been tested the most… and worked. The new restrictor plate at Daytona also seemed to work very well.
Jeff: The GWC finishes don’t need three tries, though. Two would be enough.
Amy: I agree, Jeff. A total of four attempts to finish a race is a couple too many.

Ryan Truex Driver Diary: Gearing Up for NASCAR 2010

Ryan Truex · Wednesday March 17, 2010

Ryan Truex does a monthly driver diary for Frontstretch.com. In his latest edition, the Camping World East driver talks about the start of the upcoming season, gives his opinion on the Carl Edwards – Brad Keselowski fracas, and updates us on how his brother’s doing with his new Sprint Cup operation.

We’re getting ready to go test at Greenville. We’re going to try to learn some stuff there for the race. Then we’re testing Thursday at South Boston. It’ll be good to do some stuff this week, to get back in the car and learn how to drive it again, since I haven’t been in it for so long. Just trying to get ready for the year.
